One of the most common tools for slate installation is a slate hammer.
A shale hammer is a specially designed hammer with a flat back end and a pointed edge. The flat back is used to drive nails into the slate so that it sits firmly on the substrate. The pointed edge is used to make a hole in the slate stone so that it does not split when nails are driven in.

Another important part of working with slate is both slate scissors and slate pliers.
The slate shears are used to cut the slate to the right size, it is available in both a hand-held version, as well as an impact shear that can be hooked onto the roof structure.
