Natural slate
Natural slate for roof and facade
The natural slate has a unique, beautiful and natural surface in the color shades. It covers most buildings, including new construction and renovation of existing buildings.
Available in several different sizes and colors. Can be used for both roof and facade , depending on which slate you choose.
Natural slate has been used in Denmark since the 19th century.
Is natural slate expensive?
Yes, you can say that, but remember to look at how long it lasts. It is an environmentally friendly building material, the lifespan is up to 100 years, so suddenly it is a reasonable price for your roof or facade , and it is also a natural material, with a very natural look.
What is shale?
Slate is a natural stone that has been composed of a lot of thin layers of clay or quartzite. The layers give the slate a structure that is easy to split along the natural layers, and gives this natural look.
Where does slate come from?
Most of the slate we sell here at the shop comes from Spain. Spain is the world's largest producer of natural slate. The largest and best natural slates are found in the northern part of the country, here in Galicia and the neighboring provinces. Here they have an area with a great tradition in mining. 90% of natural slate used for construction comes from Spain.
Natural slate causes the least environmental impact
There is very little energy consumption in the production of natural slate. Therefore, roof and facade slate have the least environmental impact. It was already assessed by the independent database Inventory of Carbon Energy (ICE, University of Bath).
The production of natural slate requires less water, less energy is used and there is much less pollution compared to tiles, bricks, metal sheets and other materials, which often require a lot of energy and heating during production.
CO-2 consumption per kilos of material produced
- Concrete roof tiles 0.19 kg
- Clay roof tile 0.43 kg
- Roof slate 0.0055 kg
Exploitation of the shale resources
In order to make optimal use of the raw material, many slate producers have gone from making 60x30 and instead make 50x25 or smaller. In this way, there is not as much waste in production. In addition to better sustainability, it also provides a more solid and durable roof and the slate looks more beautiful on the roof.
Advantages of smaller shale
- More fixings per m2 and more secure against extreme weather.
- Stronger surface. Large slate formats are more fragile against loads, hail etc.
- Better working environment, as the large plates are heavy to handle with one hand when they have to be nailed down.
- More beautiful and better roof and facade, as smaller slate formats fit better on the roof and can work better with the movements of the property.
- Better options for making sway or curved surfaces. This is not possible with larger formats.
- Neutral economy. Although more nails have to be driven in as more slates are used per m2, it will ultimately be the same price, as the individual slates are cheaper the smaller the sizes.
